So my friends and I were going to go on a canoeing trip down the Wisconsin River from Sauk City to Boscobel in about 3 days..... It was our first time on this river, and we were excited!! We made about roughly 15 miles on the first day, and found a great big flat sandbar to stay the night on...After making supper, fishing, swimming, and talking, watching movies, and playing games by the fire....we decided it was time to go to bed...later that night however, a massive storm blew in hard. Hail, strong winds, torrential rain, and extreme lightning made our tents and gear soaked, and ourselves even colder and more miserable. We were going to tough it out and finish our goal, until one of our phones said "flash floods alert". We were nervous seeing as we were by a powerful river, at night, on a flat sandy island....in a raging storm. We called 911 and they advised us getting to higher ground....we exited our tents and saw that the river had come about 30 feet closer to our tents...we were downright scared at this point...we jumped in the canoe with just our life jackets, space blankets, and signaling gear...and paddled out way to a nearby peninsula using the lightning to guide us....Us 3 then scrambled up into the woods and made sure to secure the canoe...we then again called 911 and asked for an extraction...we were all extremely cold, wet, and being eating alive by mosquitos...it was also 2:15 AM at this point, pitch black! The dispatcher was calm, and said that help was on the way....withing about 2 hours, we heard a boat coming! We fired off the flare gun and made a lot of noise...they found us!! What a relief! They brought us aboard the skiff and wrapped us in warm blankets and made our way back to the dock about 1.5 miles away downriver....once we got there...we were greeted by about 15-20 firefighters, paramedics, and other rescue personnel...we were so glad to be taken care of...they were all so nice and considerate...and we had a nice warm ride in the back of a ambulance back to the Arena fire station...they brought us inside, and while we waited about 3 hours for our ride to come and pick us up, they kept making sure we were okay...and gave us more water, blankets, and even a hot breakfast!! Finally when our ride made it, they suprised us with that fact that they had gone back and had retrieved ALL our gear we had left behind, including some very expensive items and a kayak....we were so humbled by their generosity and kindness to us...they even helped us pack up our van, and wished us well on our way! We are indebted to their professionalism, kindness, and sincerity to our cry for help...and how effectively and efficiently they got the job done right!! They worked in bad conditions, late at night for us, and you do not know how good it feels!! Thanks to all involved...we will never forget you!!
